Kids and their Classic Rock tees…

By jimrob on January 3, 2009

I had some interesting thoughts on teenie-boppers wearing tee-shirts sporting stuff from Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, and other “artists” whose prime was twenty or more years before the birth of the kid. I’ve forgotten most of them since the thought entered my head this afternoon at work, thanks to being tired and hitting the booze tonight.

A lot of this stuff (older music) has meaning to it. Cultural change. Revolution. Drunken hedonism. That sorta thing. People who were themselves young when this stuff was new are often shocked to see twelve or thirteen year old kids wearing a shirt bearing a leering image of Iggy Pop or something. “Dear Lord!” they say. “Doesn’t that kid know what that guy sang about?” (Completely ignoring the fact that they listened to the same music at that age.)

Well, here’s my opinion. Kids today (saying that sure does make this near-30yo feel old…) don’t look for meaning in music. Today’s music doesn’t even have meaning, for the most part. A kid could be boppin’ out to a song about live kittens being thrown off a bridge with stillborn babies tied to their tails and not care, so long as MTV and their friends said it was cool. Does that mean they’d hit the pound then start digging through the biohazzard container at the local Family Planning center? No. It means they like whatever music they’re told to like, or whatever music everyone else likes.

If your kid is rockin’ out to Bon Scott singing about venarial disease, Steven Tyler singing about oral sex lessons at the high school prom, or Robert Plant singing about getting his “lemon” squeezed, don’t worry about it. The kid probably doesn’t know what the song’s about anyway. Odds are its still better than today’s stuff.

Suh, Ah’d Like to Withdraw Twennah Confedarate Dollahs….

By jimrob on January 3, 2009

Wal-Mart wants to build a Supercenter within a cannonshot of where Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant first fought, a proposal that has preservationists rallying to protect the key Civil War site.

A who’s who of historians including filmmaker Ken Burns and Pulitzer Prize winner David McCullough sent a letter last month to H. Lee Scott, president and CEO of Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (WMT), urging the company to build somewhere farther from the Wilderness Battlefield.

“The Wilderness is an indelible part of our history, its very ground hallowed by the American blood spilled there, and it cannot be moved,” said the letter from 253 scholars and others.

How dispicable. An evil pro-China, anti-America, anti-union, anti-everything-but-money big-box retailer wants to build a store on hallowed historic ground! The audacity! The horror! The… oh, wait a minute.

Wal-Mart and its supporters point out that the 138,000-square-foot store would be right behind a bank and a small strip mall, a full mile from entrance to the site of the 1864 clash that left thousands dead and hastened the war’s end.

So let’s take another look at this now that we have all the facts. Battlefield, then bank, then strip mall, then a possible Wal-Mart. What’s the big deal here?

“We recognize the significance of the Wilderness Battlefield, but we are not building on the battlefield,” said Keith Morris, a spokesman for the world’s largest retailer.

Preservationists argue the store site is still significant because it was used as a staging area by Union troops.

“Is it blood-soaked ground? No, but it is a part of the battlefield,” said Jim Campi, a spokesman for the Civil War Preservation Trust, which lists the Wilderness Battlefield as endangered.

Where was the outrage about the bank and strip mall? Did the union soldiers stop and use the ATM on the way to kill ‘em some rebels? Did they visit a scrapbook store at the mini-mall on their way back to archive their victory?

Gah, I hate sticking up for Wal-Mart.

December 27, 2008 Ice Storm

This one contains photos taken by Denise and I following last Saturday’s surprise ice storm. It started with 1″ of rain, then turned to 1/2″ of ice. Fortunately, it all melted away in the afternoon before any damage could occur.

Night Shots

These are some photos I took on an amazingly clear night earlier this week. They aren’t the best, but they still look very neat. I used Denise’s camera with a tripod and remote shutter switch.

The feed url is changing. I’m using feedburner now… although I’m not sure what the difference is between that and what I’m already doing. Other than Steve not having to change subscription settings the next time I freak out and move the blog.
