Thoughts on the new AC/DC album
By jimrob | October 11, 2008
The new AC/DC album got leaked online! I can’t wait until it comes out, I gotta take a listen before I buy it (which I’ll do anyway to keep the all-album collection up-to-date).
1 - Black Ice: Classic retarded (in a good way) rock ‘n’ roll. I like it.
2 - Skies on Fire: The opening drum beat sounds like “Take me to the River” by… uh… crap, I can’t remember. The Talking Heads? The rest of song sounds like something off of Blow Up Your Video. Definitely different than I’m used to.
3 - Big Jack: Sounds like Rock ‘n’ Roll Damnation meets 80’s hair metal. (Again, in a good way.) Phil’s drumming is great. This sounds like something off Fly on the Wall if Brian weren’t singing in a Wal-Mart bathroom.
4 - Anything Goes: Oh my good Lord, this is different… it sounds like The Darkness! Brian is actually singing… this is like nothing I’d ever expect from this band. This is f’n awesome… it almost sounds like it’s in a different chord.
5 - War Machine: Ooooh yeah, kick ya in the gut. Love Phils once-again different than normal drum work.
(Took a break for dinner - restarted with Anything Goes. That song is extremely catchy, but just doesn’t sound like AC/DC… I never thought I’d hear them doing something so out of line with the rest of their stuff. I love it.)
6 - Smash ‘n’ Grab: Dunno what to say about this one. Sounds like filler material off of Blow Up Your Video; still a good ‘DC tune though. Love the backing vocals and chorus. I really like the little riffs Angus plays leading up to the chorus.
7 - Spoilin’ For a Fight: I like the opening. Another song with lots of new stuff that sounds like other bands I like, but just can’t pinpoint who it is. Good power chords. Again, Phil pushes his “creative” limits on this one, much to the anticipation of everyone who follows this band.
8 - Wheels: Sounds like Drivin’ Wheel by Foghat. It REALLY sounds like a modern-day country song at some points.
9 - Decibel: Sounds like “Superstition” by Stevie Wonder at first, then picks up just a bit. Pretty repetative.
10 - Stormy May Day: Sounds like Lynrd Skynrd or the Black Crowes! It’s Southern rock! I love this!!! Sounds like the opening to Twice as Hard if it were slowed down a little. The lyrics started… ah, the fascination is gone a little. Still okay so far. Maybe this song’ll redeem itself. (Later) Nope. Sounds like they were needing one more song, then happened to look outside and see it raining.
11 - She Likes Rock ‘n’ Roll: Wtf is with the bass on this song? It reminds me of those old Foot Locker commercials from the 90’s. I’m skipping past this one.
12 - Money Made: Maybe the uniqueness of an AC/DC album that isn’t comprised entirely of songs that sound exactly alike is starting to wear off. This song actually sounds like it slows down in the middle. It sounds like a country song, which I like.
13 - Rock ‘n’ Roll Dream: Oh… my… lord… it’s a BALLAD! AAAAGGGH!!!! I think my testicles just crawled up into my gut. This is an AC/DC song? At least the other one that was WAY different was good. Ugh. Skippin’ it. The one thing we all feared more than an economic collapse has come true - an AC/DC ballad. Ugh, ugh, ugh. I’m gonna puke. This calls for a margaritta to wash the taste out of my mouth. At least they’re trying something different, I guess.
14 - Rocking All The Way: Can we buy Mal a thesarus? He seems to be stuck on the word “rock.” Sounds like the other blah stuff on the album.
15 - Black Ice: Sounds okay starting out. Brian’s vocals are just too different to take this right now.
All in all, it’s new AC/DC so I like it. It’s definitely different, that’s for sure. I’ll have to listen to it a few more times to get used to it. I think it’ll still be better than Ballbreaker and Blow Up Your Video (the two unquestionable turds of their career), but I doubt it’ll break into the second-tier stuff like Flick of the Switch or The Razor’s Edge. (First tier, of course, being Back in Black, Highway to Hell, For Those About to Rock, etc.)
I think it’s just that it’s so damn different. Like when Metallica came out with a grunge album that had a country song on it - a lot of fans just couldn’t adapt. I dunno. Just… agh, I dunno.
