Looking for Work Again.
By jimrob | August 29, 2008
When I applied for my new job, I asked if I’d ever have to work out of town. Their response was that they seldom did out-of-town, overnight work and I’d rarely be gone for days at a time. I also asked about weekends. They said they seldom worked Saturdays, and only worked on Sunday if it were an emergency. Sounded great, so I signed up.
Welp, fast forward a few days. The subject got brought up with a coworker. I told him what I was told, and he gave me some wonderful news. They lied to me. Over half the jobs this company does are out-of-town, overnight jobs where you live in a hotel, hours away from home, for five days a week. They almost always work on weekends, helping out on other jobs that are behind schedule. As a matter of fact, the job we’re on now is the first job he’s been on in three years where he gets to go home every night.
They lied, and quite massively at that, to get me in the door. Wonderful.
So if you happen to be a school, nursing home, hospital, or whatever, looking for an electrical contractor to work on a project, please consider a company other than a certain to-be-unnamed-company headquartered in Ames, Iowa. They aren’t exactly the most honest people to work with.
(Did I mention that we’re doing a government job for the National Guard, and only working two-thirds of the hours we’re billing them for? I bet that would go over great if it got leaked on the internet somewhere…)
