Outrageous Agriprocessors Judgement
By jimrob | July 7, 2008
I’m listening to the Jan Mikelson show on 1040. There’s a guest host today, I didn’t catch his name. He’s discussing the outrageous events surrounding the Agriprocessors immigration raid in Postvile a few weeks back. Here’s the best one he mentioned.
The state of Iowa is fining these people for their illegal activities. The amount of their fine? A measly $10,000. That’s it. That’s all they’re being fined (by Iowa, anyway) for facilitating identity theft, illegal immigration, employees not paying taxes, child labor violations, employee abuse, and paying less than minimum wage. That’s in addition to running a facility where people lost limbs and lives.
It gets even better, if you can believe it. The judge was late to the hearing where the fine was to be levied. He stated that, since the time of the Agriprocessors executives was worth money, he reduced their fine 25% to $7500! Unbelievable! They charged employees thirty dollars for their pants, thirty dollars for their shirts, screwed them out of proper pay, and screwed our government out of tax revenue. But their time is worth money, so their fine is reduced.
I call shenannigans. I’m sure I’m not the only one.
