Lawmakers Pass New Statewide Tax For School - Politics News Story - KCCI Des Moines
The Senate has approved a plan to replace a local-option sales tax with a statewide 1-cent tax.
The proposal would create a new formula for funding school repairs and ease property taxes.
The measure heads to Gov. Chet Culver, who is expected to sign it into law.
The local 1-cent sales tax had already been approved in all 99 counties to fund school projects. But supporters of the bill said the system was not generating enough funds for rural school districts.
The supporters, and architects, of this bill are the educrats at the Des Moines Public Schools. They complained that they ran out of local option money before they could fix all their buildings. Their solution? Take away the local tax, make it statewide, and distribute the funds accordingly. What a crock.
WELCOME TO IOWA!
