WHO TV - Des Moines: Iowa City parents push for organic school lunches

A push is on for organic school lunches in Iowa City.

Nearly 300 parents have signed a petition asking the school district to use more fresh, locally grown and organic ingredients.

Food service coordinators say efforts are underway to buy more locally grown food, but serving organic increases costs, making it almost impossible.

The petition is by the Better Iowa City Food committee. While organics is 1 of the group’s top priorities, it also wants to reduce the use of sugar and processed meats.

The Iowa City district serves about 6,200 lunches daily and has an annual food budget of about $1.5 million.

I’m all for reduced usage of sugars (especially corn syrup), factory-processed meats, and a return to local food production. This effort is lost on me, however. If you don’t like what the school is preparing your child for lunch… then make it yourself and send it with them. They’re called lunch boxes for a reason, people. Remember? Little plastic (and way back when, metal) containers with kid-sized thermoses that MOM filled with food for lunch?

I guess in today’s two-income world (gotta have that 2,500 square foot split level in the ‘burbs, you know), taking care of your own kids isn’t a priority any more.
