Strict smoking ban heads to Culver | DesMoinesRegister.com | The Des Moines Register

All Hail Governer Culver’s Frozen Custard Butter Burgers, and his limp-wristed nanny-state socialist cronies in the Iowa Legislature!

In Iowa, it will now be illegal to smoke in bars, restaurants, bowling alleys, and any place else someone who doesn’t like cigarettes may see you with one. The only places you can now legally smoke in public are casino floors and tractors. (We’re lucky it’s still okay to smoke in tractors. Since they’re technically a workplace, they were covered by the workplace smoking ban portion of this bill. One “legislator” proposed stickers in the tractor windows so people could report their activities. Seriously.)

The only reason people can smoke in casinos is because of the “furor” raised by casino groups over how much this would kill their business. What about bars? What about bowling alleys? Think this won’t hurt their business? Guess it doesn’t matter when you don’t have a multi-million dollar lobbying organization to buy off those oh-so-uncorruptable Democrats that represent the will of the Iowans who didn’t even want this damn thing passed.

This is what happens when we let the government meddle in healthcare. You want your “comprehensive healthcare reform?” Here it is! Banning activities that cost “the people” money. Not that I think it would be much better if the government didn’t plan on socializing the healthcare system. Insurance companies, tired of fulfilling their contractual obligations, are probably creaming themselves over this one.

Stupid stuff like this is what happens when you elect Democrats, people. Since November, we (Iowa) have made homosexuals a protected group in schools, are considering making it illegal to drop out of high school and making graduation requirements much harder by combining them with college credit requirements, considering increasing the gasoline tax while at the same time trying to empathize with people who can’t afford gasoline, and best of all passed a $1 per-pack cigarette tax increase to fund children’s health care and then banned smoking in nearly all places that it’s done.

George Bush may look, sound, and act stupid, but at least he’s got more common sense than this.
