Should Iowa Kids Be Required To Exercise? - Des Moines News Story - KCCI Des Moines
Iowa school children could be exercising more and eating less junk food under a bill making its way through the Legislature.
Under the measure, children would be required to get moving for a-half hour each day and junk food would disappear from the vending machines.
The proposal is aimed at curbing childhood obesity. It outlines the minimum amount of time children must be physically active at school, whether during physical education class or another time.
Recess likely won’t count.
The bill also calls for nutrition guidelines that would govern all foods outside the hot lunch line, including vending machines and school stores.
It also requires students to be certified in CPR by the time they graduate.
Welcome to the nanny-state! We can’t have fat people in our country, because they die too soon and cost the taxpayer too much money.
There is a poll on this topic. I, of course, voted no. The results were disappointing though - about 70%, if I remember correctly, support this proposed legislation. People, if you want your kids to get exercise, then send them outdoors. Maybe if both parents didn’t work full-time jobs then one would be home to send their little marshmallow men outside to run around a while.
