Could someone fill me in on the connection here?

I’m listening to Coast to Coast AM again. The guest tonight is an organic farmer speaking on the evils of GM foods and promoting small-scale agriculture. George, the host, asked him if he ate meat. The guest stated, “I quit eating meat twenty years ago in response to the Vietnam war.”

Okay, two immediate things I notice. First, it was 1988 twenty years ago. That was a long time after the war’s end. Second, what would becoming vegetarian do to end a military conflict? His reasonings were that “he no longer wished to be a part of this society.” I can certainly empathize with that particular sentiment, but there’s very little direct correlation between eating habits and societal interaction. (There is some, of course. The Bible states we aren’t to eat food prepared in pagan rituals… but that’s not my point.)

He told how this lead him to “respect cattle.” It may have, but one doesn’t have to stop eating something to respect it. I would argue that deer hunters have a much greater respect for deer than those who just picture them as starry-eyed cartoon figures.

He then went off on how becoming vegetarian led him to find god. George interjected that “there are many paths to god.” There may many routes to a “god,” but there is only one path to the God.

This is one of the many reasons why I just can’t understand these people. I pick up a copy of Mother Earth News, enjoy the articles about solar power, organic gardening, and whatnot, but just can’t grasp the religious viewpoint these people have of their practices. This whole “living Earth” ethos baffles me. Will the trees in the Amazon forrest cry if I plant non-organic tomatoes this summer? Will eating GM green peppers cause Iraq fatalities to increase?

You’re expecting logic from Coast to Coast? You could call the show and tell him you’re growing alien mushrooms in your basement and he’s believe you.

A while back, Glynis, the numbers lady, was on. That’s right, she can distill your life down by your birthday and know everything about you. In fact, she knew the Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman marriage was doomed to failure because of their numbers. Wow. I would have never thought that a Hollywood marriage would break up.

Good point. That show isn’t exactly a standard-bearer for fact-checking and truthfulness. Or sanity, for that matter.
