I Am Not a Consumer.

I recently posted over at The Last Link a quick spleen-venting about RFID tags. The industry, as shown in internal documents, is suggesting that users (Wal-Mart, Target, etc.) lie to customers about what the tags are. They suggest calling them a newer version of the bar code, or even calling them “Green Tags.”

They also suggest giving the customers the option of deactivating the tags. Well bless yo’ heart, isn’t that just so nice?

Deactivating the tags shouldn’t be an option - it should be required by federal law. The government has the power to regulate this via the much-abused commerce clause. Fat chance of that happening though - big business would never allow such a thing. There’s ill-gained profit to worry about!

I am not a consumer - I am a human being that purchases things necessary for my sustained living, and some things just to make that living enjoyable. I am not “market data,” nor am I a “end-user.” I am a being in the image of my creator, and I go by the name of Rob. The only data you need on what type of underwear or Orange Juice I buy can be obtained by looking at raw sales data. Anything beyond that, such as tracking my specific purchases for the purpose of targeted advertising, is an unconstitutional invasion of privacy that I refuse to tolerate.
