Immigration Then vs. Immigration Now

In his column over at World Net Daily, Walter Williams compares immigration of the past versus immigration of today.

WorldNetDaily: Do we need immigration laws?

The United States is a nation of immigrants from all over the world. The resulting ethnic mosaic goes a long way toward explaining our greatness as a nation. Immigration has always been a blessing for us, and it still is. But yesteryear’s immigration and today’s differ in several important respects. For the most part, yesteryear’s immigrants came here legally. Because there was no welfare state, we were guaranteed that they’d work as opposed to living off the rest of us. Furthermore, they sought to assimilate and adopt our culture and become Americans. That’s not so true today, where Hispanic activists seek to impose their language and culture on the rest of us. At some public schools, they’ve raised the Mexico flag atop the U.S. flag. They’ve announced that they seek to take back areas of the U.S. that were formerly parts of Mexico.

I believe this very point is one that most of the pro-invasion pro-amnesty people in favor of proposed immigration reforms either fail to understand or just ignore altogether.

I, and others of similar opinion, are not against immigration. We are fully in support of people who wish to move to our country and become one of us. What we are against is people who illegally come to our country, overburden our unconstitutional “safety net” welfare system, refuse to learn our language, and demand we cater to their “ethnic nature”.

If you want to move to America and contribute to our culture, fine! Just leave yours at home when you do it. We don’t hate Mexicans - we just hate the imposition of their culture on ours.

And in case anyone feels like saying (despite the fact I just stated I am not anti-immigration) that I’m a descendant of immigrants and wouldn’t be here if not for immigration, I’ll tell you this: I am 12.5% Cherokee Indian. My ancestors were here before yours even sailed over from England. I’ve got the brown eyes and hair to prove it. So PPPHPPTT!
