One step closer to actually doing it….

By jimrob | February 3, 2007

Dave and I measured the portion of my property which will have the most to do with the antennas. I was surprised with the amount of room I actually have over there. I could put up two verticals and phase them, if I was that ambitious (I’m not).

I will indeed be going with the 55′ 160/80/40 vertical, and will elevate it to ten feet. One of the radials will be passing over my garden, and I’ve thought of having it double as supports for vining beans. Probably not, but you never know what I’ll come up with.

Now that the antenna planning is finished, I can start planning the garden. That’s a whole other mess to get straightened out…

Dude, just use that little UHF loop antenna that comes with your TV. :)

I tried, but I didn’t have enough foil to pick up Taiwan.

That same 55′ design has intrigued me but I’ve stayed away from it for the hassles of elevated radials.

Instead, I’ll be putting up a 70′ tower and trying to figure out what to do for lowband operation (80/160) using the tower as a support (inv L looks like a possibility).

GL with the vertical.

I was going to try using a tower as the antenna, but as this probably won’t be a permanent QTH, I probably won’t be putting up a tower in the first place :-)
The radials won’t be much of an issue here. They’d all run over parts of the yard we don’t get much use of anyway. The long one would run right between the house and garage, so it would work out nicely.

I’ve been told that verticals are an “acquired taste” when it comes to antennas, so I’m a bit leary of my first one being a homebrew that costs upwards of $250 for just the aluminum (nevermind the wood posts used as supports, the time to dig holes for the supports, building permits if required, etc.)

But, the fun of radio is experimentin’, right? :-)
