14 White LED Table/Desk Lamp-The Electronic Goldmine

From the product description:

Portable white LED table/desk lamp features 14 bright white LEDs, a base which holds 3 “AAA” batteries (included) and a flexible metal neck. The head can be adjusted to any position desired because of the flexible metal neck. Has push ON / push OFF switch in base. Silver color. Base is about 4.5″ x 3.1″ and neck is about 7″ long.

At this technological point, I believe LED lighting to be the best companion for a solar-power system. (There are some very promising technologies on the horizon… a Google search will reveal some interesting things being developed). While this lamp runs on 4.5v, anyone capable of building a solar-power system should be able to build a 12v to 4.5v regulator.

These lamps were mentioned on the QRP-L.org e-mail list. It was stated their light was a tad blue, which is to be expected. It was suggested that replacing two of the white LEDs with a red and green LED could make the light “whiter”, and remove the blue hue.

Even if you aren’t on a 12v solar system, converting this lamp to run off your 12v power supply and replacing the LEDs would make a fun weekend project.
